Romans 8 can be called “the Holy Spirit chapter” in this letter because Paul is so intent to describe the work of the Spirit that he names him 15 times in the first 17 verses. Eric focused on everything the Holy Spirit does in this chapter. The Holy Spirit gives us life, union with Christ, and freedom. He mediates God’s presence, assures us of our salvation, and gives us confidence in death. He gives us power and wisdom to put sin to death and leads us into the things of God. He confirms our adoption and communicates the Father’s love to us. In all this, the Holy Spirit confirms his own presence in our lives, assuring us that we are heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.
